“v.e.r.s. poster”—the abbreviation corresponds to the German word for ‘verse’. v.e.r.s. is formed from the initial letters of the German terms for ‘(imagine’, ‘recognize’, ‘talk’ and ‘ponder’ listed after the title. The work is the first of a sequence of ten pictures and functions as an introduction to the complete work. The original ten ultimately became twelve pictures: three times four pictures each in picture frames in a bigger frame, forming a triptych.
To make things easier for those who are unfamiliar with the international phonetic alphabet or who may not know it at all, here is the re-transformation into the source language. In the case of phonemic pictures whose source language is not English, a translation into English is also carried out.
v.e.r.s. (vorstellen erkennen reden sinnieren)—miniposter verkörpern gedichte und texte ebenso wie bilder, symbole und laute. sie entstehenaus dem zusammenspiel von bits, bites und handwerklichem, befassen sich im weitesten und auch im engeren sinne mit sprechen und denken: laute in der stille. dass es sich um künstliche gebilde handelt, muss allein schon durch die nutzung des hilfsmittels rechner, im wesentlichen die textverarbeitung word oder aber donald knuths schriftsatzsoftware ‘t’ ‘e’ ‘x’ in verschiedenen dialekten angenommen werden. ob es sich um kunst handelt, lässt sich nur in der sicht der betrachtenden finden, denn es handelt sich um er-, gedachte, leise lautgeschriebene und somit gesprochene werke. die betrachtenden sind gefordert, das auf dem papier sichtbare zu transformieren, um zu verstehen. sie erarbeiten sich die komposition, indem sie im prozess der transformation mit dem auf dem blatt sichtbaren in kommunikation treten.
v.e.r.s. (imagine recognize talk ponder)—miniposters embody poems and texts as well as images, symbols and sounds. they arise from the interplay of bits, bites and craftsmanship, dealing with speaking and thinking in the broadest and also in the narrower sense: sounds in silence. it must be assumed that these are artificial formations simply because of the use of the computer as a tool, essentially the word word processor or donald knuth’s ‘t’ ‘e’ ‘x’ typesetting software in various dialects. whether it is art can only be found in the view of the viewer, because it is a matter of imagined, thought-out, quietly written aloud and thus spoken works. the viewers are required to transform what is visible on the paper in order to understand it. they work out the composition by communicating with what is visible on the page in the process of transformation.
