At least in my generation Herman Melleville’s “Moby-Dick—The Whale” is not only still a household name but was also still read. I’m not so sure about today’s generation. The work is nothing more than an adaptation of the novel published in the middle of the 19th century to modern times. The white whale is replaced by a black whale and Ahab meets his hated enemy with a fishing rod. This depiction reveals the novel’s inherent view of the relationship between man and nature: the whale embodies the power and indifference of nature towards human ambitions.
