The work is a variation of the 'SKeYe' theme. By installing a refraction measuring glass, the sub-topic "eye exam at the optician's" is built up. When the nocturnal background for 'SEAshell' was finished, I had scenes from 'Sleepless in Seattle' (Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks) in mind. So the work became the prequel to 'Seattle'. Even though "SEAttle" is more than 100 miles away from the Pacific Ocean, I associate the city with the sea. Perhaps it is due to the interconnected waterways of Puget Sound that separate Seattle from the open ocean. "SEAshell" refers to both the shell's exoskeleton and the seawater shell itself. More than that, the term "shell" conjures up an image of a gas station rising from the sea at night under a full moon—an image that is not necessarily associated with our environment in a positive way.
